聯合國祕書長潘基文12日就翁山蘇姬(Aung San Suu Kyi)所領導的政黨，在緬甸大選的表現向她致賀；但他也警告，緬甸要打造一個民主體制，未來還有很多艱鉅的工作要做。
儘管潘基文提到，像是洛興雅族(Rohingya)穆斯林等少數選民，被當局拒絕了投票的權利，但他仍形容8日舉行的選舉，是緬甸從軍事統治轉型的一項「重大成就」。
然而，潘基文也表示，在緬甸民主之路的前方、以及在未來走向舉行真正全面性選舉的道路上，仍有許多艱鉅的工作有待完成。
潘基文發表聲明說，緬甸的人民和領袖能共同為他們的國家，打造一個更美好的未來，一個沒有人會被邊緣化、易受傷害且被歧視的未來。
潘基文並且形容緬甸軍方接受大選結果，具有「獨特的重要性」。包括緬甸武裝部隊總司令敏昂萊(Min Aung Hlaing)、以及緬甸總統登盛(Thein Sein)，都已恭賀翁山蘇姬領導的全國民主聯盟(NLD)贏得全國大選，並保證會和平進行權力移轉。
